What to look for in a college or university
There are additional factors that need to be considered, especially if your child has had a history of emotional or mental health problems. To ensure the well-being of your child, please take it upon yourself to question, review, and evaluate the college or university’s approach to student mental health.
- Evaluate each college by the availability, sophistication, and specialization of mental health programs and services on campus.
Select below the college or university whose mental health or counseling center you would like to visit:
- Inquire about the college's mental health policies, including whether it has a policy on "self-inflicted injury."
- Become familiar with the mental health services in the nearby community.
- Determine whether the college's administration is working to provide the essential mental health services necessary for your child's health and well-being.
In an effort to assist parents of college-bound students, The Jed Foundation has prepared a checklist (26K pdf file) to use as your son/daughter embarks upon this college transition. This list was developed and endorsed by an expert panel of college, medical, and other healthcare officials. Compare the services offered at the college or university you are considering with the checklist provided to better evaluate your options.
