Have a question? Here are some answers.
The Jed Foundation receives many questions. Unfortunately, we don’t have the staff to respond to everyone individually. The following are some of the questions we have received to date and the answers we believe to be the best. If you have a question, please fill out our contact form.
What on-campus groups exist that promote mental health?
For a growing list of organizations that have been created by students, go to Student Sites. A few national organizations have set up chapters on college campuses, for example:
Active Minds (www.activemindsoncampus.org)
SPAN (Suicide Prevention Action Network) (www.spanusa.org)
NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) (www.nami.org)
What materials on mental health are available to be distributed on campus?
The NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) has free brochures that can be downloaded or ordered. See, in particular:
- The Invisible Disease: Depression: a brief overview of the symptoms, treatments, and research findings (NIMH, 2005)
- Stories of Depression (NIMH, 2002)
- What Do These Students Have in Common?: how the stresses of college can lead to depression (NIMH, 1997)
- What to Do When a Friend Is Depressed (NIMH, 2001).
The Suicide Awareness Event Resource Kit, compiled by SPRC and SPAN USA, has a wealth of materials, some of which are pertinent to on-campus events.
Finally, check out The Jed Foundation's library on this website for many depression and suicide resources.
