Reporting to the Chief Programs and Operations Officer (CPOO) and serving as a key member of the program team, the Director, Marketing and Communications will serve as JED’s lead in the development and implementation of promotional strategies to raise awareness and educate our stakeholders about JED, our impact and programs.  This role will play an integral part in JED’s five-year expansion plan spanning 2021-2025 and will engage in the planning and preparation for this plan. JED is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and forward-thinking Director of Marketing and Communications to lead a high-performing team toward ambitious goals. The Director will set the communication strategies for the organization, work collaboratively across the organization to execute against those strategies, and lead and inspire a high-performing team. Reporting to the CPOO, the Director is a member of JED’s leadership team and will be based in the New York office.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Team Management and Development
    • Manage three full-time marketing and communications team members (Social Media and Communications Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and Communications Fellow) in the implementation of JED’s communications initiatives, and oversee their professional development; ensure the team has what they need to meet their goals
    • Work with the CPOO and other leadership team members to design and build a potentially expanding marketing and communications team 
  • Strategy Development and Implementation
    • Develop and oversee the execution of a national communications and marketing strategy for JED’s branding, public relations, social media, email, website and related external partnerships; ensure this strategy effectively supports issues of equity and inclusion in mental health and is relevant to teens and young adults from all backgrounds  
    • Lead existing project to design and build new JED hub website(s) to improve user experience, SEO, brand alignment and consistency, accessibility, metrics, and efficiency in partnership with our digital strategy vendors (Great Believer, Logic Dept. and Whole Whale)
    • Develop the systems and strategies to identify and elevate powerful stories from the JED Community that can help educate and inspire external stakeholders and people who are new to JED’s work
    • Collaborate with other organizational leaders to turn JED’s programmatic and research insights into compelling communications tailored to diverse audiences throughout the country
    • Collaborate with program and other  teams at JED on how to communicate about their work to educate and build awareness of JED’s key programs and resources (Higher Education, High School, Development, Evaluation, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) 
  • PR and Media Relations 
    • Manage ongoing PR/media relations strategy and execution with JED’s agency; maintain and enhance foundational messaging, protocol and process materials related to this work 
    • Develop and execute annual and monthly PR/media and communications plan with PR agency in order to raise the profile of JED, respond to important, relevant issues, and continue to build JED’s role as a thought leader
  • Brand and Content Development 
    • Build the JED brand; elevate how and where JED shows up in the marketplace by using a balance of intuition, marketing expertise, and data
    • Collaborate closely with development team on development communications strategy and event materials.
    • Collaborate with program team, partners and graphic designers on developing content and messaging and ensuring content is aligned with JED’s strategy messaging, tone/voice/visual identity, and overall branding
    • Update and develop new communications and marketing materials
  • External Relations and Partnership Development
    • Represent JED as a public face in key external engagements and events
    • Facilitate the learning and dialogue required among external stakeholders to build an even bigger and more responsive community in support of JED’s work 
    • Develop and capitalize on promotional partnership opportunities with media and other partners


  • Ability to lead and inspire a diverse and high-performing team to meet ambitious goals while also serving as a key organizational leader as part of the senior leadership team; high standards of excellence combined with a supportive and growth-oriented management style
  • Passion and commitment to the mission and vision of JED; commitment to getting young people and the communities around them to engage in our resources to support their mental and emotional health
  • At least 10 years of professional experience with a focus on marketing and communications and relationship-management; experience in either the private or nonprofit sector is valued, while cross-sector experience would be ideal  
  • Passion for and experience building strong brands
  • Strong understanding of youth pop culture, social media and other digital platforms, and the teen/young adult trends of the moment
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas beyond press releases to unleash the power of real stories, social media, SMS, and everything in between to tell the story of JED to current and new audiences
  • Strong verbal communication; experience presenting at conferences
  • Strong written communication; excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, including comfort with establishing new partnerships; experience building meaningful relationships in the media, celebrity, influencer, licensing/consumer products and creative spaces throughout your career
  • Creative and solution oriented; ability to think creatively about solutions (across partnerships, organizational pain points, etc.)
  • Culturally competent regarding diversity, equity and inclusion; able to have difficult and effective conversations about race and equity while meeting someone where they are
  • Collaborative, decisive, motivating, and engaging style; strong negotiation and lateral leadership skills
